Miniatures & Small Inch Sizes

Miniatures & Small Inch Sizes Bearings are precision rolling components manufactured to imperial (inch) dimensions, with outer diameters typically ranging from 0.1250 inches (3.175 mm) to 1.0000 inches (25.4 mm). These bearings are designed for ultra-compact mechanisms requiring high rotational accuracy, low friction, and reliable performance in space-constrained applications where metric bearings are not directly interchangeable.

Key Technical Features:

  • Inch dimension standards: Conforming to ABMA (American Bearing Manufacturers Association) inch-series standards, including R, RLS, RMS, and F-series. Common sizes include R2 (0.125″×0.375″×0.1094″), R4 (0.250″×0.625″×0.196″), R6 (0.375″×0.875″×0.2188″), and R8 (0.500″×1.125″×0.250″). Custom inch dimensions available for legacy or specialized equipment.

  • Configurations available: Offered in open (no shields)shielded (ZZ) , and sealed (2RS) versions. Open types provide lowest friction and highest speed; shielded types balance protection and low torque; sealed types offer maximum contamination resistance and lubricant retention.

  • Precision grades: Available from ABEC 1 (P0) for general use through ABEC 7 (P4) and ABEC 9 (P2) for high-precision instrumentation applications. Miniature inch bearings routinely achieve ABEC 5 or higher tolerances.

  • Materials: Chrome steel (52100) rings and balls (Grade 5 or 10) for standard applications; stainless steel (440C) for corrosion resistance; hybrid ceramic (Si₃N₄ balls) for electrical insulation, higher speeds, and extended life.

  • Internal design: Deep groove geometry provides balanced radial and axial load capacity. Optimized ball complement and raceway surface finish (Ra ≤ 0.02 μm) minimize friction and vibration.

  • Cage options: Crown-type (ribbon) cages in steel, phenolic resin, or polyamide maintain proper ball spacing. Full-complement designs (no cage) available for maximum load capacity in oscillating or low-speed applications.

  • Lubrication: Pre-lubricated with high-quality grease (lithium, synthetic, or food-grade) for sealed/shielded versions. Open bearings accept oil or dry lubricants for high-speed or cleanroom environments.

  • Torque characteristics: Starting and running torque as low as 0.1 g·cm for open miniature inch bearings, with sealed versions ranging from 3–15 g·cm depending on size and seal design.

  • Speed capability: Open and shielded versions achieve speeds exceeding 50,000 RPM for the smallest sizes; sealed versions typically limited to 15,000–30,000 RPM due to seal friction.

Applications:
Miniature inch bearings are essential for instrumentation, gyroscopes, potentiometers, encoders, flow meters, dental handpieces, miniature pumps, aerospace actuators, optical positioning stages, semiconductor equipment, model aircraft engines, and legacy American-made machinery. These bearings provide reliable, precise rotation in imperial-dimensioned assemblies where metric bearings cannot be substituted.
